UWNRG has kicked off with our very first bio robot. The Vision Team at the University of Waterloo NanoRobotics Group is dedicated to expanding the field of nanorobotics into the world of microbiology. To kick off this new path, Vision has set their sights on a new way to help the world of hydroponics. Though everything within the macrosphere of hydroponics has already been automated and controlled, we here at Vision want to help automate and control the microsphere to help promote the growth of plants. To do this, we have imagined an optogenetically controlled ethylene reduction system to help promote the growth of cannabis plants. Ethylene, the natural stress promoter in plants, is secreted under waterlogged conditions, similar to those in a hydroponics bay, to stop the growth of the plant and instead focus on the stockpiling of nutrients in the cells. Using water borne bacterium equipped with the tools to create an ethylene degrading enzyme, ACC deaminase, as well as an on and off switch actuated by different forms of light, as well as an ethylene bio sensor, we can create an automatic ethylene reduction system. This will essentially trick the plant into a state of low stress, thereby promoting the growth in a hydroponics bay environment.
